Often we look to famous photographers and see their work and wonder how is it they produce such great work and I am struggling. There are various reasons but I would like to highlight one point. I was reading a blog some time ago, unfortunately I can't remember the blogger/photographers name. But he was blogging about how excited he was about a specific photograph he captured. He went on to say it took him ten years to capture this specific photograph. Even though he had photographed this particular scene many times it was never the way he envisioned it.
That gave me comfort, because I have been through this many times, and let me tell you, it doesn't do the ego much good. I captured this shot of a Barred Owl. When I initially saw the owl I was so excited. Then as I began to position myself I couldn't quite get to a spot where I had a clean shot of the owl. I didn't know how long the owl would tolerate me dancing around trying to find the best position. I needed to capture a shot, and this was the result. I wasn't satisfied.
As I thought back to the blog I read I settled for good enough. Unless I dedicate my life to photographing owls, it may be ten years or longer before I get another opportunity.
Going back to my point why we may not capture photographs like famous photographers, is because it may have taken years to capture that one photograph, or could it be timing and a little luck. Of course being technically proficient is important and I don't want to minimize that aspect of photography; but too having the most expensive camera gear is not a requirement.
Whether this is your hobby or profession, the key to success is to keep trying and never give up.
