There is a phrase real estate agents often use: Location, Location, Location. It's almost like a mantra. When we purchase a new item that requires some skill to operate, we tend to let the excitement carry us past the learning phase. We're all in. Eventually we need to scale back and begin the practice phase, so we can become proficient at what we are doing. Keeping with the real estate mantra and a slight twist: Practice, Practice, Practice!
I've developed a three step process that I use which allows me to enjoy drone flying; and practice different techniques, to make me a better drone pilot. When I first arrive on scene, I do not begin flying immediately. I like to observe my surroundings, check for other drone flyers, and take mental note of the weather/wind. Basically take in my surroundings. Next to satisfy my desire for entertainment, I buzz around taking video's and snapping pictures. The third and final phase is to practice various techniques I would like to perfect. By carrying out these three simple steps I ensure I accomplish the most important task of the day, Practice, Practice, Practice! Filming this video I was practicing a technique while I take off. I begin with the camera tilted downward, I slowly tilt the camera upward while moving forward. At the same time I am gradually increasing altitude. This requires some coordination and is difficult if performing this technique solo. It is best to fly your drone with an assistant, usually a visual observor (VO). The VO can focus on any low flying aircraft, keeping the drone in visual line of site (VLOS), and other distractions, so you the remote pilot in control can focus on honing your skills. Although this is the system that works best for me, you may find another process, or a variation of the two, to adapt to your needs. Please enjoy and I look forward to your comments.
