I visit
Japan quite frequently and I am amazed by the dedication of Japanese chefs and
their work ethic. The selection, preparation, presentation, and finally the
delivery of each meal is remarkable. The process is almost ritualistic.
Unlike company employees who may have mentors or someone within the company
they admire; and is a source of inspiration, artists during their creative time
generally work solo.
As an artist what inspires you to achieve your goals and
perform at an optimal level? The photographs below demonstrate the artistic
approach of the Wagashi Shokunin (English translation, artisan or craftsman)
and the Japanese chef. Wagashi is a confectionery art created by the
Shokunin. The attention to detail of this craftsman is amazing. But it's the
dedication and commitment that make them successful. To reinforce my belief the
photograph labeled Japanese cuisine was prepared using seasonal food. Each item
was carefully placed on the dish and arranged to appeal to the eye. The
toppings were delicately placed as a matter of respect, so when eaten you
experience the full flavor.
And it is
from these craftsmen I get my inspiration. Although they are in a totally different
genre, I take from them the mannerisms and characteristics; and attempt to
apply it to my craft. Watch them and listen to interviews on how they approach
their craft. Although this is one source of inspiration there are others that
may appeal to you. Where do you get your inspiration? I hope you enjoyed my
blog and as always please comment. You can follow me on Twitter @DannyBaker0
That food looks like art. Every time I eat at a place like that I feel guilty for destroying such beauty!
ReplyDeleteIt is art, I slow the process down by taking photos.
